Last offered here with the XR5 Turbo badge, the model known elsewhere as the Mondeo ST was retired some years ago when meeting Europe’s tightening emissions led to an end for Ford’s five-cylinder turbo models.

But that same move saw the Focus ST hot-hatch reborn with a thumping four-cylinder turbo engine, and a new rendering this week has the media circus again speculating at the potential for a new Mondeo ST.

Crafted by independent digital artist ‘Auto Projecoes’, this speculative rendering sees the incoming new Mondeo enhanced by the addition of the Focus ST’s wide mesh grille and sports body-kit.

There’s also Ford’s familiar large alloy wheel design, finished in a shadow black and backed by a powerful set of performance brakes.

As for power, a new Mondeo ST could again share the smaller Focus ST’s engine, this time a 185kW 2.0 litre turbo four.

But, while that would give the Mondeo a decent kick, we could even see the new Mustang’s 2.3 litre turbo engine star in the new Mondeo.

The same mill is expected to make its way to the unconfirmed (but frequently spied) next-generation Focus RS hatch, churning out around 225kW.

Figures like that would make the Mondeo ST one of the more powerful options in the midsized volume-selling sedan market - and certainly one of the few developed with a performance bent.

For now, however, Ford has offered no word on plans for a new souped-up version of the Mondeo.

We live in hope… and await the Mondeo’s long-coming Australian debut in 2015.
